Dr Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984)
The founder of the Feldenkrais Method ® of somatic education, Dr Moshe Feldenkrais, was a Ukrainian-Israeli engineer and physicist whose own knee injuries provided the impetus for the development of the method. His ability to synthesise knowledge from a vast range of disciplines was remarkable, and he brought his understandings to bear in the most practical of ways to support the optimisation and maturation of human beings.
Drawing on his knowledge of physics, body mechanics, neurology, learning theory, psychology and the martial arts, Dr Feldenkrais developed his unique somatic education system, using gentle movement and directed attention to facilitate learning. His intentions are well summarised in the following quote:
“My purpose is to allow people to move closer to actually being creatures of free choice, to genuinely reflect individual creativity and emotion, freeing the body of habitual tensions and wired-patterns of behaviour so that it may respond without inhibition to do what the person wants.” ~ Moshe Feldenkrais
From the three professional practitioner trainings conducted by Dr Feldenkrais in Tel Aviv, Israel (1969-1971), San Francisco, CA, USA (1975-1978) and Amherst, MA, USA (1980-1983), subsequent generations of practitioners have emerged to form a growing community of over 10 000 practitioners worldwide. Practitioner training programmes continue in Australia and many other countries.
